Col (Retd) Homer Tien, OMM, CD, MD
Homer Tien is the President and CEO of Ornge, Ontario’s Air Ambulance and Critical Care Transport provider. Prior to this, Homer was the Chief Medical Officer of Ornge from 2015 to 2019. He is also a trauma surgeon at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, a reserve Colonel in the Primary Reserves of the Canadian Armed Forces, and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Military and Veterans Health Research. Homer previously served 25 years in the Regular Forces. Homer was the medical director of Trauma at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and the National Practice Leader for Trauma for the Canadian Armed Forces during Canada’s combat mission to Afghanistan. As a military trauma surgeon, Col Tien deployed to Bosnia, Kabul and to Kandahar. He chaired the Trauma Research Block for the Canadian Forces Health Services, co-chaired the Special Operations Medical Advisory Group, and served as a guest member of the US Tactical Combat Casualty Care Committee. As a regimental general duty medical officer (GDMO), Homer served with the 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment and was the first medical officer posted to Joint Task Force-2, Canada’s national counter terrorist and special operations force. As a GDMO, Homer deployed with UN Forces to Croatia, with NATO forces to Bosnia, to the Golan Heights and to Burma. Homer is still currently involved with trauma training and research with Canadian Special Operations Forces. He is an Officer of the Order of Military Merit, and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
